Customer Buying Guide
Know the difference
Herringbone
- Rectangular blocks with square-cut ends, arranged in a staggered zigzag.
- Classic, textured parquet appearance.
- Confirm block dimensions and any A/B requirements.
Chevron
- Angled-end blocks meet to create a continuous V-shaped point.
- Clean, symmetrical and strongly directional appearance.
- Confirm angle, left/right pieces and pack configuration.
Before you order
- Choose the exact product, colour, grade, finish, board dimensions and thickness. A sample is helpful because timber varies naturally.
- Confirm the fitting pattern and orientation with your installer before ordering. For chevron, verify the specified angle and whether left- and right-handed boards are supplied in the correct ratio.
- Measure each room separately in metres, including alcoves and adjoining areas. Subtract only areas that definitely will not be floored.
- Ask your fitter to assess room geometry, borders, thresholds, doorways and cuts before finalising the material allowance.
- Check pack coverage (m² per pack), stock availability, delivery access and any required trims, adhesive, primer or other accessories.
Calculate the quantity
Room length × room width (m²). For irregular rooms, split the floor into rectangles and add their areas.
Allow 10–15% for herringbone and 15–20% for chevron. Complex rooms or borders may need more. Always confirm with your installer.
Order area = net area × (1 + wastage %). Packs = round UP (order area ÷ pack coverage). Never round down.
Example (Illustrative)
| Room size | 5.0 m × 4.0 m = 20.0 m² |
| Herringbone at 12% allowance | 20 × 1.12 = 22.4 m² |
| If each pack covers 1.2 m² | 22.4 ÷ 1.2 = 18.67 → order 19 packs |
| Actual quantity supplied | 19 × 1.2 = 22.8 m² |
Note: Product pack sizes vary. Some chevron products may be sold as matched left/right packs or paired quantities — verify the product listing or ask our team before checkout.
Installation checks
Use a competent flooring installer experienced in parquet patterns. Establish and mark the setting-out line before laying.
Confirm that the subfloor is suitably dry, sound, flat and prepared. Have the installer carry out and document appropriate moisture testing.
Follow the specific product and adhesive manufacturer’s instructions for acclimatisation, fitting method, expansion gaps and underfloor heating. Do not assume all engineered parquet is installed identically.
Inspect all packs, batch details, colour variation and boards before fitting; raise any concerns before installation. Keep packaging and proof of purchase.
